Start with the complete buying bill
The catalog unit price is an indicative EXW goods price. For your planning worksheet, add the quoted transport, clearance charges, nonrecoverable duties or taxes, and any labels or packaging you buy. Record the currency and quote date. A freight estimate from a different order is only a placeholder because carton dimensions, destination and shipment size can change the result. Keep goods cost and additional costs in separate columns so the calculation is easy to update.
A carton example you can follow
Imagine buying 300 toys at US$0.50 each: US$150 for goods. Suppose the combined freight, handling and other applicable costs are US$90, and retail bags cost US$15. The total is US$255. If six pieces are set aside as samples, there are 294 saleable units. Divide US$255 by 294 for a planning cost of about US$0.87 per saleable toy. Every figure here is illustrative; it is not a quote or a suggested retail price for a catalog SKU.
Margin is different from markup
Using the rounded US$0.87 cost and a hypothetical US$2.50 shelf price, gross profit is US$1.63. Gross margin is 1.63 / 2.50 = 65.2%. Markup is 1.63 / 0.87, approximately 187.4%. They use different denominators and should not be swapped. Gross profit still has to cover expenses such as rent, wages and transaction fees. To model a target gross margin, divide cost by one minus the target: 0.87 / (1 - 0.60) gives approximately US$2.18 for a 60% scenario.
Check the cash committed by the minimum
A low unit price is only one part of a small-order decision. Multiply the required quantity by the goods price, then add the other costs. Compare the result with the cash you can allocate to this one style. If an item requires several cartons, that requirement still applies even when its price is below a dollar. Use the Low MOQ collection to compare opening quantities; use Under $1 to compare goods-price bands. They solve different buying questions.
Online bundles need an order-level view
For a hypothetical three-toy bundle at US$6.00, three units at US$0.87 cost US$2.61. If packing and selling fees total US$1.10, the remaining contribution is US$2.29 before any seller-paid postage and overhead. Add the actual fees for your channel rather than using this example as a platform rate. Make the bundle contents clear, and check that breaking a wholesale display into smaller offers preserves the product labeling each buyer needs.
Keep the worksheet with the SKU
Save the calculation beside the exact product code, selling unit and pack specification. When a reorder quote arrives, replace costs before repeating a shelf price. The planner on product pages lets you enter additional cost per unit and a hypothetical retail price; its output is a scenario, not a supplier promise. Use real sales and returns from the first batch to improve your next estimate.
Illustrative pricing worksheet
| Item | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Goods | 300 × US$0.50 = US$150 |
| Other costs + bags | US$90 + US$15 = US$105 |
| Saleable units | 300 − 6 samples = 294 |
| Cost per saleable unit | US$255 ÷ 294 ≈ US$0.87 |
| Scenario gross margin | (US$2.50 − US$0.87) ÷ US$2.50 = 65.2% |

Where these squishies actually come from
Margin starts at the source, which is why source-factory pricing matters as much as shelf price. The styles on this site come from our personally audited partner factories in Chenghai District, Shantou, Guangdong, China — the world’s largest toy manufacturing cluster — and are handled by a trading team with more than 20 years of export experience. That pairing explains the practical advantages behind these guides: fast sampling, low-MOQ mixed cartons, shelf-ready and private-label (OEM/ODM) packaging, capsule formats for gachapon programs, promotional and full-container capacity, and per-SKU compliance documentation — such as ASTM F963/CPSIA-related reports for the US and EN 71/CE-related documents for Europe — confirmed against the exact production batch. Buy wholesale squishies the way the method in this guide suggests: test small, measure honestly, scale what proves out.
Questions behind this guide
Sourcing FAQ
Why are EXW prices from Chenghai competitive?
Chenghai is the world's largest toy manufacturing cluster, so mould, material, printing, filling and packing suppliers operate at cluster scale with low transaction costs; the EXW goods price reflects that density.
What costs must I add to the listed EXW price?
Add freight, insurance, duties, clearance, taxes and any extra packaging or compliance costs, then divide the total by saleable units to find landed cost.
Does a lower MOQ change the unit price?
Prices follow quantity tiers; small-carton prices are slightly higher per piece than container volumes but let you test with limited cash, then step down the price ladder on reorders.
Can custom or private-label items be priced for healthy margin?
Yes. OEM/ODM programs quote per design and quantity; exclusive styles carry less direct price comparison and often support stronger retail margins.
